President's Report

To say it’s been an interesting couple of years would be an understatement.

Getting back to normal, we closed out last year’s fiscal calendar with our TOP GOLF Awards Banquet. We wrapped up some long overdue business at this event. Congrats to Buddy Stanford, who took home the coveted Charter 58 Award for his leadership during the pandemic.

Adam Olson was also honored for his two-year tenure as Chapter President, seeing us through our recent changes, receiving the Charter 58 Award for his transitional leadership. See photos of the event here.

Don’t forget to scroll through both pages to capture the entire feel of the evening. Love to have you there next year!

OSU WEXNER MEDICAL CENTER INPATIENT TOWER TOUR

JULY 12TH, 2024
A Design Ohio “member only” tour kicked off our fiscal year on July 12th. Those who attended were treated to a tour of the OSU Wexner Medical Center Inpatient Tower. Kudos to our two guides for the event: Jamie Oxier, NCARB of Design Group & Brian Cubberley of HDR. They did a wonderful job of promoting this 2 million square foot facility. With a total construction cost approaching 2 billion dollars, it will be the 10th tallest building in Columbus. Many Thanks to Jamie and Brian!

PLANNING MEETING

JULY 13TH, 2024 9:00AM-12:00PM
Each year in July, the leadership team gathers at Columbus State Community College on the second floor of Davison Hall.
We dedicate a Saturday morning to a review of the previous year’s actions and putting the wheels in motion for the coming season.
The 2023-2024 year (FY24) brought 12 monthly meetings and another successful Design Columbus.
This year (FY25) as you can see is already in full swing. In addition to the OSU tour and the now completed planning meeting, we have basically filled our monthly meeting calendar. Check out what’s coming up Meetings. Look for additional events as they become available.
As you can see- we’ve started the fiscal year out strong!
Click on the link next page to join us for September’s meeting. It will be a good one.

Structural Glazing Defined: Understanding Applications and Project Delivery.

Course Description: Structural glazing systems have various uses in the industry but identifying the appropriate application can sometimes be a challenge. When considering structural glazing, the design intent most often is to minimize visible structure and to increase transparency whether that be a façade, canopy, or skylight. Being a niche product though, most design teams are not designing these systems on a day-to-day basis which is where the challenge lies. The goal of this presentation is to provide a better understanding of when to consider structural glass, options that design teams have, and how to incorporate these systems into your project.

Learning Objectives

  • Define structural glazing and how it differs from conventional glazing.
  • Understand the appropriate applications for structural glazing.
  • Identify best practices for detailing and specifying structural glazing systems.
  • Understand different delivery methods with case studies of local projects.
Speaker

Leave Your Mark

by Thad Goodman

I grew up in the gypsum business. My father had moved from working in plaster to the “new” gypsum way of doing things in the early 1960’s. Like many at that time, my brother and I were taught the trade and moved into the family business.

Our goal as tradesmen was to give the client the best drywall system available. For those young homeowners who had put every single penny they could afford into their American dream, we took pride in giving them our best, regardless of how big or small the home. On commercial projects, we met the needed fire ratings, the appropriate finish, kept our job sites clean and safe, completed them on time.

I’ve since moved to the manufacturing side of the business. It’s rewarding connecting the needs and wants of the gypsum business with the design community, creating communication on both sides of the fence. For the architects, providing information to understand the advantages as well as the limitations of gypsum use. For the contractors, helping them understand the reasons for the safety requirements of design and overall creativity of the architectural community. The goal is to make the Built Environment the best it can be. Participating in buildings created serve the public is gratifying. Seeing buildings built to honor an owner/area’s history or built as entirely new designs forming the horizons of tomorrow. I have great respect for our industry and am proud to be a part of it. It’s my hope that each of you feels the same way. It’s one of the reason’s I belong to Design Ohio.
